The state of TN has created many summer learning opportunities to help address learning loss that occurred during the pandemic. We wanted to share information about the various opportunities available so you can consider which of these, if any, might be the best fit for your child.

My son is eligible for ESY. It is being offered Monday through Thursday from 8:30am to 11:30am but the summer camp is being offered Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 2:30pm. It would seem that they would have to offer equal time for each program. Our kids lost time and instruction during the pandemic, too. Even more so, since learning virtually would not be appropriate for him.
ESY hasn’t changed. The summer camps were state mandated during the special session last year, and the time/subjects taught were all part of that. You can consider if the camps are a better fit than ESY if the goal is more time in school. But you should know that the summer camps aren’t required to work on IEP goals. They must only provide accommodations for accessing the learning being taught.
